For the 19th year running, the University is ranked as the greatest value among public universities by U.S. News & World Report.
In the 2024 U.S. News & World Report Best College rankings, which were revealed on Monday, UNC-Chapel Hill is placed as the nation’s fourth best public university and as high as 22nd overall.
Carolina, which has spent more than 22 years ranking in the top 5 public universities, rose to No. 4 this year from No. 5 last year. Among public and private universities, the University tied for 22nd place overall, moving up seven spots from the previous year.
Carolina came in at number fourteen overall in the rankings of the best value colleges. For nineteen years, the University has been ranked highest among public universities in the best value category.

In order to determine the Best Colleges rankings for the year, U.S. News & World Report examined 19 indicators of academic quality, such as graduate and retention rates, social mobility, faculty resources, assessments of academic quality made by presidents, provosts, and deans of peer institutions, financial resources, student excellence, and alumni giving.
Carolina is ranked in the top 50 universities in the US in the recently added Undergraduate Research/Creative Projects area of the publication.
Other UNC-Chapel Hill 2024 Best Colleges rankings are as follows:
- Nursing’s number four.
- Managerial position no. 7.
- In terms of marketing, number seven.
- No. 8 in business undergrad (tied).
- tied for 12th place in entrepreneurship.
- Ranking No. 9 for Best Colleges for Veterans represents Carolina’s sustained dedication to serving in the military and to students with a military affiliation, an increase of three spots from 2023.
